When we buy diamond jewelry, the diamond grading report is essential, which is the certificate we often say. A reliable report can help you gain a deeper understanding of the diamonds set in your jewelry. Grading reports from trusted laboratories can also act as a safety barrier against the purchase of processed and synthetic diamonds.
Gemologists perform a series of tests and scientific analyses on diamonds to detect artificially processed color and clarity. It provides us with scientific evidence that diamonds are properties and characteristics, and also proof that they are natural diamonds.
There are countless gemological laboratories around the world, but not all laboratories issue the same certificate. Each gem lab will use its own scoring system and terminology. Therefore, reports from two gemological laboratories on the same diamond may have different results.
Today, let’s take a look at the differences in the identification of the world’s four major gemstone identification laboratories – GIA, AGS, EGL, and IGI.
GIA – Gemological Institute of America.
are the world’s leading gemological laboratory and the gemological laboratory for the most trusted and widely used identification services in the gemstone industry. With offices in many cities around the world, there are more than 1,000 scientists and certified diamond graders.
AGS – American Gemological Society
Also a laboratory in the United States, AGS uses a scale of 0-10 to rate the characteristics of a diamond, with 0 being the best and 10 being the worst. AGS Laboratories is the second largest laboratory for extensive identification services after GIA. There are offices in Israel, Belgium, India, and China, Hong Kong, China.
EGL – European Gemological Laboratory
This is a European grading agency with a huge global presence, with offices in London, Paris, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, etc. EGL is known for pioneering diamond grading technology and other technologies for gemstones weighing less than one carat, in the European market has a large share.
IGI – International Gemological Institute
is the International Gemological Institute in Antwerp, Belgium, in fact, after GIA, they are the second most well-known laboratory in the world. A large number of polished diamonds on the market are actually graded by IGI, and LGI is very popular in Asian countries.
